Salmon & Trout Conservation (2020). Riverfly Census - Aquatic invertebrate species occurrence, for the calculation of pressure biometric scores in English and Welsh rivers covering the period 2015 - 2018. Occurrence dataset https://doi.org/10.15468/dz1qvj accessed via GBIF.org on 2022-07-05.

Description

Aquatic invertebrate species and abundances were obtained from 3 minute kick-sweep sampling to Environment Agency guidelines. In total 20 rivers were surveyed, typically for three years. Approximately five sample sites were chosen for each river and these were consistently used throughout the survey. Samples were preserved in Industrial Denatured Alcohol and identified by a professional entomologist in a laboratory. The species present were plugged into a biometric calculator to produce scores against various stress types, including sediment, phosphorus, flow, chemicals and organic pollution. Additional information about the dataset can be found on www.salmon-trout.org/riverfly-census, along with the reporting generated on the back of the dataset. Alternatively for more specific data related questions email Lauren (lauren@salmon-trout.org).

Purpose

Without a strong data baseline it is extremely difficult to pinpoint exact pressures or confidently measure improvement in our waters. We frequently hear from our members about missing flylife and lack of fish compared to the 'good old days', but anecdotal evidence like this has little weight in environmental decision making. Additionally, the water quality pressures threatening young salmon & trout are less obvious, and often invisible. We have used invertebrate species to generate a national baseline of river health, using them as a diagnostic test to calculate pressure scores for various river stress types.
