Description

A cohort of individuals with a shared interest in butterflies, including enthusiasts, students, and professionals from diverse backgrounds, convened at two distinct locations within the northern Bengal terrain with the aim of conducting a butterfly search. The primary aim was to observe and classify as many butterflies as possible. Furthermore, in order to comprehend the disparity in butterfly diversity between the two aforementioned locations, it is necessary to conduct a comparative analysis. The team established their campsites at Jayanti from March 16th to 18th, 2008 and at Samsing from March 19th to 21st, 2008. The team conducted a survey of the Jayanti River bed, Guenalla, and the Jayanti river area from the Jayanti location. Additionally, they explored the Samsing area, Suntaleykhola Area, and the Rocky Island area from the Samsing camp. The surveys were conducted in proximity to the river beds and adjacent to the hilly streams that were enveloped by forest cover in both regions. The Jayanti region exhibits a diverse range of forest types, including Northern dry deciduous, Eastern Bhabar, Terai sal, and East Himalayan moist mixed deciduous forests. The forest composition in the Samsing region primarily consisted of Subtropical Mixed Broadleaf Forest and Lower Temperate Evergreen Forest. The altitude of the aforementioned region was approximately 1000-1200 feet, while in the Jayanti locality, it is below 400 feet. The surveys took place from 8:00 AM to 2:30 PM.. The large cohort was divided into three to four smaller subgroups, with each subgroup tasked with exploring distinct directions within the vicinity of their designated work site. A checklist was compiled in the evening utilizing field notes and photographs obtained during the survey. The process of identification was facilitated through the utilization of diverse field guides that were accessible during that time, as well as the expertise of senior members.
