Description

This collection includes the material of 558 specimens of Rattus norvegicus and Mus domesticus used in analysis of the skull and teeth development. This material come from the PhD research carried out by Luis Gállego in the seventies. All specimens were experimental animals raised in laboratory. The collection contains skulls and mandibles from those two species. The data set is available in GBIF.

Purpose

The aim of the present data set is to provide all information of the records from the study of the development of cranial features in Rattus norvegicus and Mus domesticus

Sampling Description

Study Extent

Specimens are experimental animals.

Sampling

Due to the nature of the study, there is not a sampling description. Animals were bought for the experiment and raised at the University of Navarra facilities.

Quality Control

All specimens used in the study are deposited in the Museum of Zoology of the University of Navarra (MZNA, Pamplona, Spain) in the ‘Skull and teeth development in Rattus and Mus’ collection. After the research, data of each specimen was incorporated to MZNA database (Zootron v4.5, Ariño 1991). Unique catalogue numbers were assigned to each specimen.

Method steps

Animals were euthanized. For studying teeth development, skulls and mandibles were boiled and then, all molars were extracted and placed in bags. Skulls and mandibles were also stored in MZNA facilities.

The Museum of Zoology (MZNA) was founded in 1980 as a repository of zoological materials originating from research and instructional activities of the department of Environmental Biology (proviously known as the department of Zoology and Ecology) of the University of Navarra. Nowadays MZNA store more than two millions specimens in its climate-controlled facilities. The Museum is a Data Provider for the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) and is an Affiliate to the International Commission of Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN). The Museum is also in charge of the curation and management of the Natural History Collections of the School of Science of the University of Navarra (Spain). MZNA attends to reserchers around the world, make loans and accepts deposits.
