Description

Within the framework of the BID Caribbean 2020 Call financed by the European Union through its Biodiversity Information for Development Programme - BID, and by the Global Biodiversity Information Facility - GBIF, in the context of the National Data Mobilisation grant modality, the project "Increasing the accessibility of marine information of the Natural History Collections of Colombia, through data mobilization, strengthening of infrastructure and training" was developed. This was led by the Marine and Coastal Research Institute INVEMAR, through the Marine Natural History Museum of Colombia Makuriwa - MHNMC, and in co-execution with the biological collections of the Universities of Valle; Universidad de Antioquia; Universidad del Magdalena; Universidad Tecnológica del Chocó; Universidad El Bosque; the National Network of Science Museums, Natural History, and Biological Collections; SiB Colombia; SiBM-OBIS Colombia and GBIF.

The initiative aimed to join efforts to strengthen the country's biological collections, enriching the information associated with the specimens and marine samples they hold, and facilitating their access through the mobilization of data towards national and global biodiversity information systems.

This resource corresponds to the deliverable: Marine Biology Collection of the Biological Collections Centre of the University of Magdalena - CBUMAG, and is one of the multiple deliverables resulting from the implementation of the project. The resource compiles a total of 2283 curated specimen records, digitized, published, and mobilized to national (SiBM and SiB) and global (OBiS and GBIF) biodiversity information systems. The records are organized into 14 datasets, each corresponding to a marine invertebrate biological group or sub-collection. The number of records per group and the respective doi to the associated dataset are listed below: 1. Anélidos: 978 registers, including Sipuncula order, a group that during the implementation of the project was incorporated into the Annelida phylum. https://doi.org/10.15472/gqcscx 2. Artropodos marinos no Insectos: 565 registers. https://doi.org/10.15472/ikcgta 3. Moluscos: 266 registers. https://doi.org/10.15472/b69qea 4. Foraminiferos: 213 registers. https://doi.org/10.15472/lwgk6x 5. Nematodos: 203 registers. https://doi.org/10.15472/ffea6v 6. Equinodermos: 29 registers. https://doi.org/10.15472/hujyqa 7. Tunicados: 3 registers. https://doi.org/10.15472/ntf3nu 8. Platelmintos: 6 registers. https://doi.org/10.15472/t4turl 9. Briozoos: 4 registers. https://doi.org/10.15472/ts6aib 10. Caribbean and Pacific of Colombia

Sampling

Marine specimens o samples held at the biological collections that have the minimum required data for appropriate publication through OBiS and GBIF.

Quality Control

For each collection, curatorial activities and quality control of the information associated with the specimens were developed following four working criteria: 1. Curatorial criteria: physical verification of lots (existence, preservation, labels); verification of data from associated biological records (concordance of label data and available information, data complementation). 2. Taxonomic criteria: validation of scientific names down to the lowest level of identification of the lot. Corroboration of the taxon with a specialist. Validation of taxonomic authority based on WoRMS - World Register of Marine Species (https://www.marinespecies.org/). 3. Spatial criteria: Validation of the georeferencing of the specimen collection point represented in decimal coordinates; specification of the collection depth in meters; and validation of the correspondence of the indicated locality. Tools: Canadensys coordinate converter (https://data.canadensys.net/tools/coordinates); Google Earth Pro 2022, version 7.3.6.9345; Marine Regions Gazetteer 2022 (https://www.marineregions.org/gazetteer.php?p=search); Geovisor ANH - Agencia Nacional de hidrocarburos v.3.1 (https://geovisor.anh.gov.co/tierras/). 4. Documentation criteria: standardization of data according to Darwin Core considering the use of controlled vocabularies and the documentation of the Terms of Mandatory Completion according to national guidelines for marine and coastal data (OBiS Colombia and SiB Colombia Node), and those required in general by the OBiS and GBIF global systems. During the application of each of the criteria, the recommended tools were used to optimize the quality control processes (https://data.canadensys.net/tools/coordinates, https://www.marineregions.org/gazetteer.php?p=search, Google Earth Pro 2022, version 7.3.6.9345, https://www.marinespecies.org, Open Refine 3.5.2 tool, GBIF Data Validator, and Match Taxa tool"- World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS) website. Finally, the quality flags of both GBIF and OBIS were applied by the Node's content manager and the GBIF Advisor for the BID Caribbean projects, and the records were published through the IPT.

Method steps

  1. General diagnosis of the collections
  2. Curation of information: Collection of data from the lots.
  3. Global structuring of information according to Darwin Core standard and OBIS requirements for marine data.
  4. Purification and supplementation of missing information in biological records
  5. Data cleanliness: form aspects (spelling, typography, commas, and double spaces), rectification/correction of coordinates, dates, and taxonomic names in the records.
  6. Physical curation: verification of the condition of the preservative (in the wet collection), of the container/bag, and of the associated labels. Review of the state of preservation of the specimen or sample.
  7. Documentation of new or additional information required.
  8. Final quality validations by SiBM - OBiS Node and by GBIF assesor, for publication via IPT.
