Records of Ciconiiformes nests from registration cards of West-Ukrainian Ornithological Society

Study Extent

The dataset represents the results of 10 species of Bittern Botaurus stellaris, Little Bittern Ixobrychus minutus, Night Heron Nycticorax nycticorax, Great Whitе Egret Ardea alba, Little Egret Egretta garzetta, Grey Heron Ardea cinerea, Purple Heron Ardea purpurea, Spoonbill Platalea leucorodia, White Stork Ciconia ciconia, Black Stork Ciconia nigra nests' registrations within the territory of mainly western Ukraine for the period starting from 1962 to 2016. This dataset contains data on 42 Bittern Botaurus stellaris, 45 Little Bittern Ixobrychus minutus, 193 Night Heron Nycticorax nycticorax, 82 Great Whitе Egret Ardea alba, 10 Little Egret Egretta garzetta, 428 Grey Heron Ardea cinerea, 59 Purple Heron Ardea purpurea, 7 Spoonbill Platalea leucorodia, 234 White Stork Ciconia ciconia, 30 Black Stork Ciconia nigra.

Sampling

The collection of materials for the bank of bird nests of Ukraine took place according to the methods and on the basis of the questionnaires developed by the Western Ukrainian Ornithological Society. The search for nests was carried out both during special research and for accidental finds. A separate questionnaire was filled out for each registered nest, which indicated the species, date and place of discovery, describes the biotope and exact location of the nest, its dimensions and nesting material, the dimensions and weight of eggs or chicks (if such measurements were taken). Such a questionnaire is a reliable documented fact of the nesting of a species in a certain area. The nomenclature follows the Catalog of Life.

Quality Control

The authors of the dataset are fully responsible for the quality of the published data (species identification, georeferencing, other provided data).

Method steps

1. Conducting of a field surveys and spreading of questionnaires developed by the society.
2. Verification (if possible).
3. Identification and confirming of species.
4. Georeferencing.
5. Adding all the collected information to one unified database.
6. Organizing of the dataset according to Darwin Core standards.
