This regional collaboration supported actions targeted at European nodes to enhance their capacity to produce national checklists. Using the innovative format of intensive open-source software development used with success in computational biology, the hackathon aimed at removing barriers to collaboration while seeking to improve participants’ skills in using cross-mapping tools. The resulting tools and workflows facilitate the automatic creation of precursor national checklists using the GBIF-mediated data, the Catalogue of Life, and other data sources.
