The data holder uses publishing software to make a data resource publicly accessible. The software ensures that any internal data structure is translated into commonly agreed standard formats, thus making the resource interoperable with other available data sources. A variety of publishing software options are available.
Integrated Publishing Toolkit
The Integrated Publishing Toolkit (IPT) is the flagship software publishing product from GBIF. It provides means for connecting and serving taxon primary occurrence data, taxon checklists, and general resource metadata. It is a web application, written in the Java programming language, and is intended to be installed into local web servers operated by data holders wishing to publish their data. For full details, please see the Integrated Publishing Toolkit page.
Other GBIF Tools
While the IPT is the flagship and recommended publishing solution from GBIF, there may be cases where a simpler tool is needed. GBIF also provides a suite of tools that do smaller, very specific tasks that aid publishing, including packaging and validation of Darwin Core Archives. These tools are accessible and fully described at http://tools.gbif.org.
External Tools
In addition to the GBIF tools listed above, two TAPIR implementations and
the BioCASE Provider Software are still in active use. The IPT is the
recommended solution by the Secretariat for data publishers. However, data
published using other software platforms – such as DiGIR, BioCASE or
TapirLink – will continue to be harvested and indexed by the GBIF core
infrastructure.
