The GBIF Data Portal is a Java-based web application that allows for the discovery and access of data mobilised through the GBIF network. Through the multilingual portal user interface, users have easy access to millions of primary biodiversity records and can generate maps and spreadsheets of results and browse taxonomic information. Application developers can integrate these data within their own systems using the available web services.

The GBIF portal codebase is released under an open source license, which allows for participation, reuse and customisation in other domains. Together with the GBIF Integrated Publishing Toolkit, the GBIF Harvesting and Indexing Toolkit and a registry of providers, the tools can be installed to create a thematic network.

The portal codebase has been used as a platform to develop these biodiversity data portals:

• The Atlas of Living Australia
• The Inter-American Biodiversity Information Network (IABIN) portal for the Species and Specimen Thematic Network
