Adherence to standards is essential to ensure interoperability, especially in a global network of data publishers. This applies both to the data communicated through the network and to the modes of communication that connect databases, registries, data portals and a variety of other components.

But data publishers and data users shouldn’t have to take on the tedious technical detail of these standards. Good application tools can ensure standard compliance while providing an intuitive interface that allows users to focus on the content instead of its underlying structure.

GBIF’s informatics infrastructure builds on existing and emerging standards and tools and takes an active part in their development, in close collaboration with Biodiversity Information Standards (TDWG).
