ChecklistBank provides GBIF with taxonomic resources containing millions of scientific names. These names, in addition to providing taxonomic authority information, serve as the basis for simple name dictionaries that, coupled with advanced text processing tools, provide GBIF with powerful data mining services.
GBIF, in collaboration with the uBio project and the Encyclopedia of Life, offer a set of powerful scientific name-finding and processing tools.
- The GBIF taxonFinder service - supports a standard API developed as part of the Global Names Architecture. It can extract scientific names from web pages, PDF files (using the GBIF TIKA web service), Word documents and much more.
- The GBIF Name Parsing service is an invaluable tool for data managers who wish to compare a set of scientific names in a data store to a authority file. The name parser splits complex scientific names into their constituent parts and offers various standardised forms for comparison.
