The Harvesting Index Toolkit (HIT) is an open-source, Java-based web application that simplifies the otherwise complicated process of harvesting biodiversity data from a distributed network of data publishers. It also allows users to build an index of all harvested data, providing a means by which the data can be assimilated into a central point.
Ultimately, the HIT will empower Participant Nodes by allowing them to better mobilise data from their providers. There are tremendous benefits to be gained by enabling a larger number of nodes to aggregate data themselves, as well by ultimately decentralising the process of data mobilisation. Most importantly, we believe that only in this way can the rate of indexing of biodiversity data begin to grow exponentially. And empowering nodes to possess their own index of harvested data will allow for more regional or thematic portals to emerge.
You can download the HIT at the project site.
