The Global Biodiversity Resources Discovery System (GBRDS) is an Internet-based registry that aims to facilitate the understanding, conservation and use of global biodiversity resources by creating a single annotated index of publishers, institutions and collections, a schema repository and services.

The GBRDS is primarily intended to respond to the needs of the GBIF architecture and enable its participants to effectively share and use dispersed information resources. The functionalities of the GBRDS are aimed to be scalable and evolve over time based on the needs of both the GBIF architecture and the community.

In the medium term, the GBRDS, along with the metadata catalogue and indexes, will become a unified global entry point for discovery of all kinds of information about digitised and undigitised biodiversity resources (i.e. the ‘who, what, where, when and how’), including primary and non-primary biodiversity data, standards and services. The GBRDS will also serve to integrate the GBIF network in other systems.
