The Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) is a multilateral initiative that facilitates access to, and sharing of, data relating to the world's biodiversity via a global network of institutions and organisations. The Secretariat has designed and operates a Data Portal (http://data.gbif.org) that enables access to more than 200 million specimen and observation records held in more than 3,000 datasets around the world.
The GBIF Secretariat is seeking motivated and experienced software developers to join the implementation group based in Copenhagen, under the overall supervision of the Information System Architect. Working in a team, the appointed developers will be responsible for the design and implementation of the components used in the full data lifecycle of the GBIF network, including data publishing tools, registry services, metadata catalogues, routines to improve data quality, harvesting tools, custom indexes, data integration, discovery services, and geospatial services. There is scope to be involved in a wide range of activities and gain exposure to varied technologies and concepts including Spring, Google Guice, JQuery, Struts2, SpringMVC, PostGIS, Hibernate, LinkedData, Standards based data exchange, Lucene (including SOLR), Hadoop (including HBase, Hive), and native XML databases.
In order to be considered for these positions, you will have fluency in English, a minimum of 3 years Object Oriented design and development experience combined with strong skills in Java and databasing. Experience with Spring technologies, MVC frameworks or having expert skills in graphical design and user interface development (HTML, CSS, JQuery) will be desirable. Experience with PostGIS, Lucene and Hadoop will also be advantageous. Candidates with experience of web-crawling and building scalable search systems, taxonomic integration systems or web-based GIS will be of particular interest. You must be willing to be based in Copenhagen for the duration of the contract. Remuneration will be at competitive market rates.
