Use of GBIF-mediated data is an important success indicator for the GBIF network.  The GBIF Secretariat has therefore been tracking publications over the last 4 years (since 2007) to assess, in part, the usefulness and fitness for use of GBIF enabled data.  In 2009, these references increased to 92 from 17 in 2008.

Most of the 92 publications referred to in 2009 were written in English.  Other languages such as French, Spanish, German, Arabic, Russian, Japanese and Chinese were also used, albeit to a lesser extent.

In its analysis, the GBIF Secretariat uses three main categories to analyse trends, namely those publications mentioning, those discussing and those using GBIF enabled data.  By April 2010, data use related figures already equaled the total amount for 2008.
