Engaging new communities in data publishing

Free and open access to the world’s biodiversity data is critical to monitoring progress towards and ultimately achievement of the Aichi Biodiversity Targets.

Recently, GBIF has been working with partners to engage newer data communities such as impact assessment practitioners, wildlife managers, local governments and citizen-driven observation networks.

GBIF hosted a side event during the 11th Conference of Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP11), on 8 October 2012, entitled Engaging new communities in data publishing. The event showcased a number of innovative approaches to capturing data from these additional sources.
