The GBIF Governing Board is proud to present the winner of the Ebbe Nielsen Prize of 2002: Dr Nozomi Ytow, Assistant Professor at the University of Tsukuba in Japan.

Dr. Ytow was awarded the Prize for the development of the Nomencurator, a new database model for tracking scientific names, and how our conception and use of the names change through time. This new model was described in the following paper:

This Prize honors the memory of Ebbe Nielsen and is awarded annually to a promising researcher (normally within five years of the receipt of his/her Ph.D.) who is combining biosystematics and biological diversity informatics research that supports the objectives of GBIF in an exciting and novel way. The Prize of US $35,000 is awarded to allow the recipient to engage in such research to biodiversity outside his/her country of residence for a period of 3-6 months. However, the use of the funds will be at the discretion of the recipient.
