Regional collaboration in GBIF

Since 2008, the GBIF network has focused on developing regional collaboration among Participant nodes, including regional strategic plans relating to biodiversity data. This has led to a more formalized process of creating and strengthening regional networks, with the ability to share technologies and joint strategies for targeted mobilization and use of biodiversity data.

In 2011, the GBIF Governing Board approved the setting up of a Nodes Steering Group with representatives drawn from six regions:

  • Africa
  • Asia
  • Europe
  • Latin America
  • North America
  • Oceania

Regional representatives are elected from among six regional subcommittees of the GBIF Participant Nodes Committee and serve two-year terms. In principle, GBIF will assign each Participant to a particular region as it becomes a member in GBIF.

Held annually or in alternate years, regional meetings help Participants to focus on common tasks, set regional priorities, and stimulate specialization within the region.

Highlights of regional activities including events, data mobilization and research examples are included in the GBIF Annual Report.
