Announcing GBIF Training Workshops on “Becoming a GBIF Data Provider”
Announcing GBIF Training Workshops on “Becoming a GBIF Data Provider”
The NODES committee has set its goal to have a DiGIR network operational by the end of the 2003. In preparation for this target, GBIF will be offering seven regional workshops on the subject "Becoming a GBIF data provider".
The DiGIR network is designed to serve primary data on species occurrences derived from museum specimens and observational records. This training is designed to facilitate the development of a network of DiGIR providers serving primary data. In most instances these servers will be hosted by the Natural History Collections or other institutions that hold this type if data. It would be expected that participants already have access to these types of data sets or are preparing to train others that are willing to serve this type of information.
A basic set of documents describing the training is available on the GBIF web site under http://www.gbif.org/Support/training.
Workshop description is available under
http://www.gbif.org/Support/training/courses/course01
All GBIF Participants are invited to send one person to these events. Please take note of the target audience and prerequisites. The training is intended for technical people that are already knowledgeable about operating systems, relational databases, Web servers and XML. They should be able to install and operate the data provider packages.

supporting the following requirements
http://www.gbif.org/Support/training/hosting/classroom
and contact the GBIF Secretariat.
Help will be appreciated.
Principles for attending
- Every GBIF Participant is invited send one *technical* person to one DiGIR training event at GBIF cost. Participants should in principle choose the event closest to their region or language.
- Trainees should register on the web site
at least 3 weeks in advance.
After registering, those who have given
“Official Delegate” as their status will receive
on email an invitation letter,
which entitles them for reimbursement.
General rules of GBIF Travel and reimbursement
should be followed.
- Additional trainees with the required technical background may be sent at the Participant’s expense, provided that space is available. They should also register on the web site as “Other Attendee”.
- GBIF will support only regional training events where many Participants come. The Participant nodes are strongly encouraged to organise afterwards their own national/Participant events.
All GBIF Participants are encouraged to make use of this opportunity for training.
The plan
The plan for implementation of the GBIF network is available under
http://circa.gbif.net/irc/gbif/nodes/info/data/en/gbifnet/gbnet.html
Training is part of this plan.
The data provider software that is the main subject
of this round of training is available for download
at http://www.gbif.org/Support/training/material/course01.
It consists of GBIF-tested implementations,
for both Linux and Windows, of materials from
http://digir.sourceforge.net
as well as some programs produced by the GBIF Secretariat.
These packages will automatically enable users
to register data providers
in the GBIF central registry at
http://registry.gbif.net/,
so that the data providers can be integrated into the GBIF network and located by users.
A portal software toolkit for easy access to the distributed data sources
will be demonstrated in the training,
and new versions of it be made available for use
by the nodes in a few months.
Created 2003-08-05.
Updated 2003-10-16 for times and locations of the 3 last events.
