GBIF guidelines for financial support to attend training workshops

GBIF operates a training programme to build up skills and knowledge and facilitate that researchers and institutions make their biodiversity data available through GBIF and can benefit from the data made available by others.  Among others, the GBIF training programme comprises courses based on identified needs.

The courses are generally free of charge. However, attending the courses usually means travel costs.  Subject to evaluation and approval, GBIF will cover the travel and accommodation costs as well as the per diem expenses of the selected trainees. Eligibility for support is determined separately for each course. Look at the individual course descriptions for this.

To apply for financial support, you must fill the application form and it to GBIF Secretariat.  It must be received at GBIF Secretariat in good time before the course takes place, as travel and visa arrangements (if needed) have to be secured. This means that GBIF approximately must receive your application 2 months in advance.

You must have a good scientific and technical background in line with the requirements of the training course.  This knowledge and experience should be specified in the application form.

Please understand that even in cases where you may fulfil all the criteria, support may not be available due to financial considerations.

The costs that are allowed are determined in
GBIF travel guidelines, which have to be followed closely at all times. For countries with electronic banking systems, you will normally be asked to arrange your own travel (following GBIF travelling rules and regulations), and GBIF will reimburse your costs afterwards.  This should happen within 4 weeks of receiving your reimbursement claim and the original receipts.  For attendees from some developing countries, GBIF will send the air tickets via courier, pay the hotel, and provide a per diem upon arrival to the venue.

Please notice that you must send GBIF the application form to attend a training session and you must get an official letter of invitation from GBIF to be eligible for financial support.

Even if you are not eligible for support, qualified individuals are welcome to attend GBIF training workshops at their own (institution's) cost.  However, GBIF may limit attendance due to space availability.

Contact training@gbif.org for any questions related to this document and the procedures to follow.
