The National Institute of Biodiversity (INBio) received, in Spain, the prize “Augusto González de Linares” of environment, awarded by the University of Cantabria and the Ministry of Environment of the autonomous government.
This award recognizes people and entities that have played an outstanding role in the protection of environmental values within the cultural or physical environment of Spain or the Latin American countries.
On this occasion, the jury acknowledged INBio as a NGO from a developing country which has designed and implemented information and communication technologies to face biodiversity conservation challenges and promote its sustainable use”, according to the official release.
Furthermore, the jury recognized the environmental education activities carried out by INBio based on the Atta information system, which gathers information on species of Costa Rica, its distribution, use and interrelation with the ecosystems, as well as photographs and illustrations. Atta is available to the general public through INBio’s web page (www.inbio.ac.cr)
“This recognition filled us with joy because it recognizes that INBio is accomplishing its mission, not only in technology innovation, but also in seeking to improve the quality of life of human beings”, declared William Ulate, Leader of INBio’s Information System Development Unit.
The award “Augusto González de Linares” was received by INBio’s Executive Director, Dr. Alfio Piva in a special ceremony in the Spanish locality of Suances. It consists of a diploma, a statuette and 18.000 euros.
