GBIF has been collaborating with GEO for some time on the GEOSS work programme's Societal Benefit Area 9: Biodiversity.
GBIF has incorporated these activities into its work programme (see GBIF's GEOSS Strategy Approved by Executive Committee for more information).
GBIF has been working, together with DIVERSITAS, NASA and the GEO Secretariat on GEOSS Work Programme Tasks BI06-01, BI06-02, BI06-03 and BI07-01. This work has led to the proposal of a Biodiversity Observation Network (see http://www.bioobservation.net/declaration_bio.php) that would be a part of GEOSS, and in which GBIF-mediated data would play a major role.
GBIF is also participating in an Interoperability Process Pilot Project (IP3) of the GEOSS Data Architecture Task, in collaboration with colleagues at the University of Florence. This project is a demonstration of the ways in which data from multiple types of observing systems can be merged into visualisations that facilitate biodiversity decision-making.
