Transportation
Transfer from Schiphol Airport to Amsterdam
Amsterdam Schiphol Airport is about 20 km from the centre of the city. There is a good and frequent train connection to/from Amsterdam Central Station (six trains every hour during daytime), costs 3.60 Euro for a one way trip of fifteen minutes.
Please note that due to the construction of a new underground line parts of and around the Amsterdam Central Station are inaccessible. The west entrance/exit is the temporary main entrance exit. The east entrance/exit is also accessible.
Taxis are available at the west entrance/exit.
Public Transport in Amsterdam
Fare for public transport is charged in ‘strippen’, one ‘strip’ for each ride plus a ‘strip’ for each zone that you travel. The entire centre of Amsterdam is one zone, two ‘strippen’.
‘Strippen’ cards of fifteen ‘strippen’ (6.80 Euro) are available at the train station (both Schiphol and Amsterdam Central Station), GVB Tickets & Info (Municipal Transport Company) across from the Central Station and from most tobacconists and newspaper stores. Cards for a ride of two ‘strippen’ can be bought in the tram and bus at 1.60 Euro. ‘Strippen’ paid for in tram or bus are more expensive than those of an advance paid card.
You can stamp one card for several persons. Stamp the number of ‘strippen’ for each person. Two ‘strippen’ are valid for one hour, once you have stamped you may hop on every tram, bus or underground line, within the time and zone paid for. See www.gvb.nl.
In 2007 the ticket system for public transport is in a transformation process. The ‘strippen’ card will gradually be replaced by the new OV-Chipcard. It is expected that the devices for the OV-Chipcard will not yet be available through the entire city of Amsterdam in October 2007. It is therefor advised to GBIF GB14 participants to use the ‘Strippen’ cards.
Metro stations will be the first to be equiped for the OV-Chipcard. Both Strippen Card and OV-Chipcard will be in use and accepted simultaneously during 2007. The Strippen card will be accepted up to 2008.
