General Information

Iquitos


Iquitos is the capital of Loreto region and is located downstream the confluence of the Marañon and Ucayali rivers, where the Amazon river originates. The city, founded in the 18th century, is surrounded by tropical rainforest lowlands and has about 400 000 inhabitants. Iquitos is the most populated city in the Peruvian Amazon and is the main port of the Amazon river. Iquitos is accessible only by air or river. Languages

Spanish is the recognised language in Peru, but some people speak and understand English.
The official languages are: Spanish and Quechua


Electrical information

220 volts-60Hz. Most four and five-star hotels provide 110-volt electric current.
Also in Talara (Northern Peru) electric power is 110/220V and in Arequipa (Southern Peru) frequency is 50 Hz.

Weather

The climate in Iquitos is tropical, hot and humid with an average temperature of 28ºC. In spite of the heat, it can rain frequently and suddenly; so always pack a raincoat and insect repellent just in case. It is certainly less steamy in the dry season (April-October) and this is probably the best time for a visit.

Biodiversity resources

Great diversity of forest and aquatic ecosystems provide plenty of natural resources used for food, medicine, recreation and trade. Loreto, due to its geographic isolation, has the most conserved forests in the Amazon. Nearby Iquitos we have interesting world biodiversity records (in # species): birds (780), reptiles (194), amphibians (186), monkeys (22), trees/hectare (283), palms (̴ 80 ).


Money matters

The Peruvian currency are Nuevos Soles (S/.) and cents . There are 100 cents to a Nuevo sol. Notes are in S/. 200, S/. 100, S/. 50, S/. 20 and S/. 10 and coins in S/. 5, S/. 2, S/. 1, 50c, 20c, 10c, 5c, and 1c. Foreign currency can be exchanged at banks: Banco de Credito, Banco Central de Reserva or Money Exchange office which can be found at airports and most large centres. Peru has a modern banking system and the majority of shops and hotels accept credit cards. Most of the establishments accept the most popular credit cards, such as Visa, Master Card, Diners and American Express. Travelers' Checks are used with some limitations. Inquire at the establishment as to whether or not they are accepted.
The current exchange rate is:
US$1= S/. 3.21 nuevos soles
€ 1 = S/. 4.11 nuevos soles
IGV (General Sales Tax) is currently at 19% and is added to the price of most goods, services and accommodation.

Other Issues

  • Some of the hotels suggested have internet access throug a Pc provided by the hotel.
  • Banks open from 9:00 am to 1:30 pm and 4:00 pm to 6:30 pm. But Banco de Credito, Banco Continental and Interbank open from 9:00 am to 6:30 pm (continously). Also there are several ATM available in the downtown area.
  • Shops are open since 9:00 am to 1:00 pm and 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm.
  • Please check with your local health authorities about possible vaccinations.
