Descriptions of the events
Below are short summaries of what will take place during 13th Governing Board of GBIF.
1 October - How to start a GBIF node - Meetings with new or recent members
|
Venue: Instituto de Investigaciones de la Amazonia Peruana (IIAP)
http://www.iiap.org.pe
This session is open to Governing Board members, Node Managers, and
Observers considering GBIF membership. The aim of the
session is to help prospective and new GBIF Participants, and recent
Participants, consider the best way of contributing and benefiting from
GBIF, and specifically translating the requirement to provide a node
into their own circumstances. The Nodes Chair, Vice Chairs and Nodes Liaison Officer will be available
throughout the meeting as an "expert panel" and keen to hear the questions
of the Participants, and do their best to answer them using experiences
and best practice gained so far. The Nodes Committee will
organise a timetable for the consultations liaising with delegates who
indicate they would like to take part in it on their
registrations. The intention is to offer individual sessions for
each interested Participant, so that the panel can concentrate on the
specific questions and circumstances of the participant. We may
need to organise some working in groups if demand is high.
Established Participants may wish to use the session to discuss
specific issues about their node activities or clarify interactions
between their node and the GBIF work programme.

The Allpahuayo-Mishana Reserved Area, created on March 4, 1999 by the Peruvian government,
encompasses 57,600 hectares of land approximately 26 km south of Iquitos. The rainforest near Iquitos
is famous for their habitat heterogeneity. A combination of historical and geological events has given
the area a mosaic of diverse soil types- ranging from pure white quartz sands to red clays. Each of these
distinct formations supports a unique community of plants and animals, the result being that Allpahuayo-Mishana
contains one of the highest biodiversities known in the Amazon basin.
