HIGHLIGHTS IN IQUITOS

In Iquitos city: the boulevard, rubber boom era buildings, Belen village-market and Quistococha Zoo.

Pacaya Samiria Reserve: The name of Pacaya-Samiria comes from the names of two rivers that run through it: Pacaya and Samiria. The Reserve has a great diversity of wildlife as well as aquatic life: 449 bird species, 102 mammals, 69 reptiles, 58 amphibians, 256 fish and 1,204 plants. Threatened or endangered species that can be found in the PSNR are the jaguar (Felix oca), the black alligator (Melanosuchus niger), the giant river otter (Pteronura brasiliensis), the manati (Trichechus inunquis), four different species of primates and two different species of turtles. Located approximately 350/380 km south of Iquitos.
Allpahuayo Mishana:The AIlpahuayo-Mishana Reserved Area, created on March 4, 1999 by the Peruvian government, encompasses 57,600 hectares of land, approximately 26 km south of Iquitos. The rainforest near Iquitos is famous for their habitat heterogeneity. A combination of historical and geological events has given the area a mosaic of diverse soil types- ranging from pure white quartz sands to red clays. Each of these distinct formations supports a unique community of plants and animals, the result being that Allpahuayo- Mishana contains one of the highest biodiversities known in the Amazon basin.www.siamazonia.org.pe/rnam
Quistococha Tourist Center,is a tourist park covering over 900 acres, located around the lake of that name, at 4 km south of Iquitos, on the Nauta road. The lake covers an area of half a square mile, and has an average depth of 26 feet. Besides its undeniable natural attractions, it has an aquarium-museum, a serpentarium, small zoos, surrounding trails and a small dock with boats for hire. The Ministry of Fishery allows sport fishing as there is an abundance of tasty "paiche", "tucunare" and "mojara".
